The headline has two meaning here. First of all, I'd like to know what are you guys like to listen. Second of all, it is the title of one of my favorite bands, Porcupine Tree - www.porcupinetree.com -

*kayjensen recently posted a deviation called "Porcupine Tree" - the title instantly caught my attention of course. There it was - the photo was made with greetings to Porcupine Tree, The Band. This is the inspiration why I care to update my journal again (I'm not a frequent poster, a post per year is good enough :P )

I was arguing with someone (don't remember who it was..) a couple of years ago, what IS good music. Is it something hip and modern with all the rapping gentlemen and shaking boobs in mtv top? Or is it something more valuable, more lasting, something that you'd like to listen again over 2, 10, 30 years. Basically, we came to a conclusion that good music is something that you have in your CD-shelf - this just because we were very picky about what do we get there. Special editions, limited items, order-only albums and so on.

After about 15 years of collecting music (I'm a bad collector, had only 50 CD-s in my shelf), one day my daughter took one of the CD-s and asked (she's 3) why is there so much dust at the jewel cases. This instantly made me to give away all my collection as I realized I really do not need the actual albums any more. They had made their work (they were there when I needed it), and it was time to send them to another round, to someone who'd really wipe off the dust and put the discs in cd-player. Basically, I had Porcupine Tree and Marillion related music there. If you know these two names thoroughly, you know the other names as well.

As with giving the music away for free, it was not so easy. One of the fans of the Marillion even paid me fifty bucks for the whole collection of albums and I bought a couple of gallons of gas for it, perhaps a beer or two as well.

When I think about the headline.. What kind of music are you listening to?.. I must admit I don't even know the latest trends of recent ten years. Decided to do a little experiment - entered a public chatroom and asked a random person to recommend me three songs that were his/her absolute favorites of recent times. Basically, got the music I was expecting to - typical pop music I happen to see on MTV (I don't know if the channel actually even exists anymore, but I sometimes read related news from the holy internet, so I guess it does).

Going on with finding the answer.. I finally came to a conclusion I like to listen to something that fits my mood.. if I even have time to listen to music at all :) I never thought I answer this question in a way like this. I thought I still listen to progressive, deep music only. I'd had no hesitation to reply Marillion in 1998 or Porcupine Tree in 2003. But today I can't say something like that. It is not the good old times sorting out "Brave" from the cd-shelf and setting up a competition who can hear more clicks and bells and dings and dongs Steve Hogarth had hidden behind the music. It's just not so anymore :)

Well.

If you ever reached so far with reading, I think it would be really great, I mean it would absolutely interesting and exciting to, if you could tell me what are you listening to? What kind of music ya like? What are your favorite artists, songs, styles and melodies? AND :) If you find an extra minute, maybe to list 3 songs that you find are SOOOOO good, that I definitely need to listen to them..

It's just because I believe the Dream of Artists is alive :-) I really think the whole community is somewhere out there, creating art, drinking coffee (or whatever their preferred poison is) and LISTENING to to the good music as well :)
